Tsurugajo Castle in Fukushima prefecture was originally built in the 14th century. It was able to withstand assaults from man and nature and earned the name the indestructible castle. That was, up until the Meiji Restoration. It was destroyed in the Boshin War of 1868 as a bastion of the old Tokugawa alliance. It stands again today after subsequent renovations and being re-purposed into a museum. It has a red-tiled roof which is unique among Japanese castle keeps. It is a great place to learn about Japanese history and samurai. The castle can alternatively be called Wakamatsujo Castle.
