京都御所
京都市街のほぼ中央に位置する京都御所は、鎌倉時代中期から明治時代初期まで歴代の天皇が住んでいた邸宅でした。明治時代に政府が京都から東京に移された後、京都御所は平安京の生活や日本の建築様式の移りかわりを現代に伝える建物として保存されています。
京都御所は現在、通年で一般公開されており、明治・大正・昭和天皇の即位式が行われた格式高い「紫宸殿（ししんでん）」や、天皇の日常生活の場であった「清涼殿」、池を中心とした日本庭園「御池庭」など、優雅で厳かな雰囲気を感じながら参観することができます。
「京都御苑」と呼ばれる東西約700m 、南北約1,300m の広大な敷地には約5万本もの樹木が植えられています。2～4月の間に梅、桜、桃が見ごろを迎え、11月中旬～12月上旬には紅葉が色づき、季節によって美しい風景を堪能できます。また、野鳥の宝庫としても知られており、鳥の鳴き声を聞きながらゆったりと散策することができる憩いの場としても親しまれています。

It felt special being so close to such an important historical Japanese location. The experience itself is a sort of trail past various buildings in the palace grounds culminating beside the emperor's personal quarters. Beside each building, there is information detailing the building's purpose (in English and Japanese). Entry is free and the palace is located in the middle of the Kyoto National Park with many other things to see. Overall, this spot is a must see for anyone visiting Kyoto.
