Abashiri City Historical Museum
The Abashiri City Historical Museum is one of the oldest museums in Hokkaido relating to Abashiri's nature and history. Abashiri has a relatively mild climate given its northern location, and throughout the year there is a lot of sunny weather. A wide variety of animals inhabit this area, including marine mammals such as sea lions and seals, brown bears, and Ezo sika deer, and inside the museum there are exhibits dedicated to these local creatures. The museum also has displays of everyday objects that represent Paleolithic culture, Jomon era culture, Okhotsk culture, and Ainu culture; agricultural equipment from the pioneer era; and everyday goods from the Taisho through Showa eras. Through these precious historical documents, visitors can investigate the nature of Okhotsk and the history of northern culture that the people of Abashiri have continued to protect.
