Meruhen No Oka Memambetsu
Meruhen-no-Oka, or the Hill of Fairies, is a viewpoint located along National Route 39 which connects major cities of the Doto area Kitami and Abashiri. Potatoes, wheat, beans, beets, and other vegetable fields stretch as far as the eye can see, and the colors of the hill change with the seasons: green in spring, white with potato flowers in summer, golden with wheat in autumn. This area was also the filming location for the director Akira Kurosawa's film "Dream," and the tranquil scenery of the interweaving fields and sky leave a lasting impression. In particular, the dyed red of the sky at sunset is a moment of true beauty, and it has become a popular spot among a number of photographers. Located nearby is the Meruhen Culture Center where customers can purchase local products from Ozora-cho.
