Wakato Ohashi Bridge
Wakato Ohashi Bridge is a suspension bridge with a length of 627 meters that connects Kitakyushu City's Tobata-ku and Wakamatsu-ku wards. It was first opened in 1962, and at the time it was famed for being the longest suspension bridge in the East. Due to that, it became a model for other bridges built later, including the Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo and the Akashi Kaikyo Ohashi Bridge that connects Honshu and Shikoku. The Kukinoumi Fireworks Festival is a summer tradition in Kitakyushu City, and each year 300,000 people visit to see the fireworks displays. A symbol of Tobata-ku and Wakamatsu-ku wards, the red framework of the bridge is illuminated at night, coloring the city of Kitakyushu.
