Oyama Senmaida
Oyama Senmaida is a collection of 375 terraced rice paddies that stretch out over the slopes of a mountain in Kamogawa City, Chiba Prefecture. One of Japan's Top One Hundred Rice Fields, it is known for being the closest collection of terraced rice fields to Tokyo. Additionally, Oyama Senmaida is the only water-filled paddy field in Japan that is cultivated solely by rainwater, and it is inhabited by a variety of precious plants and animals. Even now, the beautiful landscape is maintained by people, and hands-on agricultural experiences such as rice planting and harvesting are offered; people can even adopt a field and become the owner themselves.
In late October the Tanada Night Festival is held, at which 10,000 LED candles and 3,000 pine torches illuminate the nighttime paddies. Not just illuminations, however; at the same time, there are also exciting stage events and fireworks. Even after the festival period finishes, the 10,000 LED candles are left to light up the fields until early January in an event called Tanada no Akari, so even if your trip doesn't coincide with the festival, you can still enjoy the magical nighttime atmosphere.
