Oki Jinja Shrine
Oki Jinja Shrine is located on Nakanoshima Island of the Oki Shoto Islands, and was established as a shrine to worship the 82nd Emperor of Japan, Emperor Go-Toba. Emperor Go-Toba was known for being multi-talented, accomplished in both the literary and military arts. He reigned during the early days of the Kamakura period, and is known for his efforts to take back political power and restore it to the Emperor. The crest of the shrine is a chrysanthemum, which Emperor Go-Toba was said to be fond of; this is also the origin of the crest of the current Imperial household. Annual festivals are held in spring and fall in honor of Emperor Go-Toba, and in November people in the agricultural and fishing industries on the island offer some of the produce they've harvested to the gods in a thanksgiving festival; cuisine using products of the island are served as well. In addition, the blooming cherry trees that line the pathway to the shrine in spring, called Oki Ichi, is not a sight to miss.
