Toba Sea Folk Museum
At the Toba Sea-Folk Museum, visitors can learn about the history, current lifestyle, and future of people living in fishing villages, such as fishermen, ama divers (female fishers who collect shells and seaweed), and sailors. Of the approximately 60,000 documents and archives related to the sea at Mie Prefecture, 6,879 have been designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. The museum is also tailored to inspire the curiosity of children with its hands-on nature experiences, such as animal observation and seaweed cutting. Throughout the year, adults can enjoy cooking classes in which seasonal seafood is used as well as making crafts with seashells and seaweed. Amamon seafood, which is caught by the ama divers of the area, is sold at the museum's shop and is great for souvenirs.
