Oarai Isosaki Jinja Shrine in Ibaraki Prefecture is known for its red torii gate on a rock in the sea. Because of the stunning view at sunrise, this Shinto shrine is a popular destination for the first prayers of the new year, hatsumode. The shrine is said to have been founded in the 9th century, but it was destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt in the Edo period (1600-1867). Another interesting feature are the frog statues that protect the shrine.
