Kuratake Jinja Shrine
Kuratake Jinja Shrine has recently become famous as the 'magnificent view' (zekkei) of Amakusa among instagramers. It is a Shinto shrine on the top of Mt. Kuratake that provides a spectacular view over the Amakusa islands and the sea off the mainland of Kumamoto, with a stone torii gate in the front. It is said that when the stone pedestal with the deity's image tilted in the Kumamoto Earthquake, local residents felt sorry for the deity and repaired it. Locals also regularly place small offerings, such as seashells, in front of the deity to express their gratitude and affection. Take a look when you are visiting and don't forget your camera or smartphone.
