Kosanji Temple
Kosanji Temple is a Buddhist temple located on Ikuchi Island in Hiroshima Prefecture. It is a worthwhile stop for anyone traveling or cycling along the Shimanami Kaido. Kosanji Temple is an impressive modern Buddhist complex with an interesting combination of styles and facilities that is unique even within Japan. It was founded in the 1930s by a wealthy entrepreneur from Osaka to commemorate the death of his mother. The temple is said to express his gratitude towards her and bring good fortune to mothers. Although built in the 1930s, its architecture is inspired by ancient Japanese temples from the Nara (710-794) and Heian (794-1185) periods. However, it also incorporates distinctive modern elements, such as the Hill of Hope and a cafe and gallery. There is also a museum with Buddhist statues and other historical artifacts on site.
