Jokoji Temple
Jokoji Temple is a lesser-known Zen Buddhist temple in Obama city, Fukui Prefecture. It was founded in 1630 by a woman called Jokoin to pray for her dead husband, a major daimyo, and parents. The temple still preserves letters and calligraphies by her as well as a portrait. The temple was damaged by fire in the twentieth century and abandoned, but it was reconstructed in 2001. Today it is well-known by locals for the Japanese iris festival. About 2500 Japanese iris flowers blossom from early to mid June on the temple grounds, creating a beautiful scene that flower lovers will appreciate.
