Izunuma-Uchinuma Sanctuary
The Izunuma-Uchinuma Sanctuary is a nature reserve in Miyagi Prefecture. Encompassing Lake Izunuma-Uchinuma and its surroundings, the marshes and wetlands provide an ideal environment for many local and migratory birds, making it a popular destination for bird lovers and photographers. In particular, ospreys can be seen here from May to July, reed warblers in June and July, and white-fronted geese from November to January.
In addition to the many species of birds, the reserve is also known for its abundance of lotus flowers that bloom in July and August. During the peak blooming period, there is a lotus flower festival during which visitors can take small boats through the marsh and see the flowers up close.
