Chichisugi Japanese Cedar
The Chichisugi Japanese Cedar is an 800-year-old cedar tree that stands towering on the eastern side of Mt. Daimanjisan on Dogojima Island, the largest of the Oki Shoto Islands. It's over 30 meters tall, and the thick trunk splits into 15 separate trunks part way up. At a spot about 10 meters from the ground, 24 giant stalactite-shaped milk roots hang down, some reaching up to 2.6 meters long. These milk roots are actually the reason why the tree is called Chichisugi, which literally translates to “breast cedar.” The area surrounding the tree is relatively cool even in summer, and especially when it rains, a mysterious atmosphere fills the air.
