Takkoku no Iwaya Temple, located in Iwate Prefecture, is a 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple dedicated to Bishamonten, the deity of warriors. The temple is carved into the base of a hangover cliff, and it is believed to have been founded during the early Heian period (792-1185). It has burned down and been reconstructed several times throughout history, the most recent reconstruction having been completed in 1961. 33 of the original 108 statues of Bishamonten remain today, and visitors are welcomed to the temple by three beautiful torii gates.
