Shiga Kogen Highland
Shiga Highlands contains vast virgin forests and wetlands. Designated as a UNESCO “eco park,” it is considered one of the world’s most unique tableland areas. Many activities can be enjoyed within this natural environment including trekking, camping and cycling. Fall colors can be enjoyed in the autumn, and skiing is possible during a long winter season spanning mid-November to May. Special events are also an attraction. They include the mountain-wide “Ski Area Opening Festival” held on the first weekend every December, and a beer festival with beverages and live music held in mid-March. Healing the body after an active day out skiing or trekking is possible at one of the many hot springs. In the summer, the “Tenku Festival” is a great chance to enjoy the night sky. Its location sometimes offers a glimpse at “unkai,” or the view above the clouds. Attractions are thus prepared for enjoying the unique atmosphere even when the weather is not clear.
