Rurikoin Temple
Rurikoin Temple is a secluded Buddhist temple in Kyoto. It is located at the foot of Mt. Hiei in the northeast of the city, near the Takanogawa river. It is famous for its traditional Japanese garden and architecture which express harmony between nature and culture. Looking out into the garden from the Shoin (drawing room) is a peaceful and relaxing experience. On site, you can also find a traditional tea room and the predecessor of later Japanese steam baths. As with most Japanese gardens, it is worth revisiting in a different season as the scenery changes dramatically. Rurikoin is particularly beautiful when dressed in the autumnal colors, or during snowfall. Note that the temple and some its treasures, such as its Pure Land Buddhist paintings, are not always open to the public, so be sure to check in advance if you had anything in particular you wanted to view.
