The Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo is one of the few museums in Japan to focus on ukiyo-e. Ukiyo-e are literally 'images of the floating world': the term refers to wood-block prints from the Edo period (1600-1867). The museum displays works from the private collection of Seizo Ota, founder of the Toho Insurance Company. The museum has turned into a hub for ukiyo-e research, and awards grants to Japanese and foreign researchers.
