Nagasaki Peace Park encompasses the area that was the hypocenter (ground zero) of the nuclear bomb blast that destroyed Nagasaki on August 9th, 1945, together with the top of the hill to the north. The park was created in the wish for world peace and with a vow never to repeat the tragedy of war again. The Peace Statue, which symbolizes these wishes, and the Fountain of Peace, which represents the feathers of the birds of peace: the crane and the dove are two renowned landmarks in the park.
