Kushiro Washo Market
The Kushiro Washo Market, along with the Hakodate Morning Market and Sapporo Nijo Market, is one of Hokkaido's Three Great Markets, and it is the market with the most history in Kushiro. It is comprised of about 60 shops with plenty of goods for sale, including fresh fish and shellfish and processed marine products. The market is famous for a dish called kattedon, in which customers make their own original seafood donburi rice dish by choosing their own ingredients. To make kattedon, a customer will first buy the rice for the base of the donburi dish, the go around the market and purchase seafood products to put on top. With the many varieties of fresh, delicious seafood available, kattedon is definitely not an experience to pass up. The operating hours for the market change monthly, so it's a good idea to check the official website before visiting.
