Keisokuji Temple is a Buddhist temple in Shiga prefecture that is a top spot for autumn foliage (momiji or koyo in Japanese). Founded in the 8th century, the temple can look back on a long history, but its prosperity declined towards the end of the Edo period (1600-1867) and it was abandoned. It is now maintained by local residents. Its main attraction for many visitors today is its scenic approach that leads through the woods. The leaves turn crimson red in fall (from mid November) and create a spectacular scenery that can compete with the best in Kyoto.
