Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, revered as the god of learning, and is Japan's first Tenmangu Shrine. It is known as one of the Three Great Tenjin Shrines of Japan together with the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto and the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka. In honor of the birth of Sugawara no Michizane on June 25th and his death on February 25th, the Tenjin Market is held at Hofu Tenmangu Shrine on the 25th of each month. At the market, there is a wide variety of fresh produce, antiques, dried products, and handmade crafts.
