Things to know
The Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks Show originated as a festival to inspire hope in people during restoration from war devastation. It is now one of the largest fireworks displays in Japan, featuring over 20,000 fireworks over the course of two nights in early August. Some of the main highlights are the Furusato Wa Hitotsu and Niagara displays, but the climax of the show is the Phoenix fireworks. The Phoenix display is a section of the show several minutes long where sequences of fireworks are set off in time with background music, signifying rebirth and encouraging people to overcome damage in the aftermath of disaster. In addition to the fireworks, there are a number of other attractions, such as taiko drumming, traditional dances, lantern floating, and mikoshi portable shrines. There are plenty of food stalls where visitors can purchase snacks and local treats to munch on during the fireworks show, and after the fireworks finish, there is a “light message” in which festival-goers hold up their own personal pen lights to illuminate the area. Unmistakably one of the biggest events of the season, make sure not to miss this festival during your summer trip to Japan. |
