The Inami district of Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, is known as a town where the traditional techniques of Inami wood carving are still practiced today. It is also one of the Japan Heritage Sites recognized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. In this video, we will dig deep into the charms of Inami through interviews with temple and shrine carpenters and wood carvers.
Zuisen-ji Temple, which is said to be the origin of Inami wood carvings, is decorated with gorgeous, delicate carvings. Passing through the center of the town is Yokamachi Street. This street is lined with artisans' workshops, from which the pleasant sound of wooden hammers can be heard. There are carvings scattered throughout the entire town, making the whole place feel like an art museum.
